For years, professionals have assumed that hypnosis could not be used with clients. That is no longer true with the methods Dr. Mike has refined. This workshop will be interactive, including a brief lecture on the use of hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming with Deaf clients. Dr. Mike will demonstrate a few techniques with volunteers from the audience and show how healing can be achieved with Deaf clients using relaxed states.

Psychologists working with deaf and hard of hearing individuals frequently are called upon to take an advocacy role. This advocacy may take the form of ensuring that the American’s with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements are followed in the workplace, teaching others about deafness, and supporting the rights and abilities of deaf clients, professionals and trainees. A deaf professional survey was conducted and the preliminary findings will be discussed.

HOPE After FLOYD, Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services was implemented as a grant program for the purpose of providing more adequate and qualified services to Deaf, Deaf-Blind and Hard of Hearing survivors of Hurricane Floyd. In a collaboration effort, East Carolina University, Association of Health Education Center (AHEC) and HOPE After FLOYD Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services team designed a videotape “When a Disaster Strikes: The Community Response to Deaf and Hard of Hearing People”. This videotape was designed for those who wish to prepare in responding to this population in a more culturally appropriate manner, shall a disaster strike again. Clips of “When a Disaster Strikes: The Community Response to Deaf and Hard of Hearing People" videotape will be shown during this workshop.
